Did you know that Salt Water is corrosive? Here in South Florida, no matter where you are, you are probably not further than two hours away from an Ocean. The environment is harsh, full of salt, moisture, wave action, and humidity. Concrete is a porous material. If not properly waterproofed, coated, and maintained, structures exposed to this environment will begin to have concrete deterioration. Once moisture penetrates the concrete and the salt reaches the reinforcing steel (rebar), which is providing the structural/ reinforcing support to the concrete, the rebar begins to rust. The rebar then expands and fractures the concrete, which results in a condition called Concrete Spalling.
